February 20, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet services wholesaler Tucows (services.tucows.com/) announced on Wednesday that as of February 14, the company had over 150,000 domain names in its private domain name portfolio. Included in these domain name assets are 39,000 surnames, 22,000 brandable names and 88,000 direct navigation names.
Also included in Tucows’ private domain name portfolio are over 1,000 “Gems,” domain names that are considered to have the highest potential value like Amnesty.com, Corked.com, DogBreeders.com, Jewellers.com, Ouzo.com and Stylist.com.
“Companies, both large and small, are willing to invest in high-quality domain names to ensure visibility of their brands and steady traffic to their websites,” says Elliot Noss, president and CEO of Tucows. “Over the past two years, Tucows has built a portfolio of domain names that we view as one of the best in the world. We have sold thousands of these names to date, and we will continue to pursue sales of domain names from our portfolio both individually and as bundles.”
To best obtain value from the domain names, Tucows says its portfolio team strategically sells its names via live and silent auction, while some are bundled and sold or leased individually to interested parties. Others end up being sold as premium names through the company’s network of resellers.
Earlier this month, Tucows enhanced its email service, providing customers with the option of using the spam and virus filtering portion of the service in conjunction with their current email infrastructure.
