December 18, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — TruSecure Corporation (trusecure.com), a company specializing in managed security services, announced today that it had successfully protected its clients against the Goner virus. The company also said it found that close to half of North American companies one of its divisions polled had been significantly affected by the virus. The Goner virus, a program that used a flaw in Microsoft Outlook to spread itself and attack anti-viral software and firewalls, caused millions of dollars in damages two weeks ago when it was released by four Israeli teenagers.

Although the virus did not cause as much damage as had been expected, it still managed to infect several thousand machines. A survey by ICSA Labs, an independent division of TruSecure, indicated that of 147 North American companies with more than 500 workstations, all were exposed to Goner, with 48% actually experiencing any significant effects, and most exposures resulting in 10-18 infected computers.

“Many companies simply don’t realize that approach to security is as important as technology,” said Dr. Peter Tippett, TruSecure’s Chief Technologist. “Most organizations already have the products and people in place to prevent infection from ‘malware’ such as Goner, they simply don’t have the capabilities or direction to best utilize these resources.”

For clients of TruSecure, the rate of infection was down to 1.5%. This success rate was because of a pro-active approach to the issue of Internet security rather than a reactive one. Instead of simply reacting to the virus after it had been released, TruSecure had ensured that its clients understood essential security practices and had configurations that could fight any virus. This immediately minimized the damage that the virus would have caused.
