Michelle Martin of Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In the second technology – operations track session of day two at HostingCon 2010, Green Geeks’ Trey Gardner, 1&1 Internet’s Christine Skiffington and Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s Michele Martin delivered their shared presentation, “Transitioning Toward Green Hosting”.
Skiffington started by discussing the massive growth of cloud computing and that 2 percent of the world’s carbon emissions stemming from the technology.
She gave some practical ways of green hosting, such as small changes in the workplace (recycling, reusing), deploying custom built servers and efficient power supplies within data center, and switching to green energy or buying RECs to offset energy consumption.
Next up was Martin, who started by discussing Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to encouraging and funding activities and projects that lead to agreater reliance on renewable energy.
Martin argues that using RECs and offsets can improve brand value and customer loyalty, which eventually results in a higher ROI.
Gardner closed off the presentation by talking about Green Geeks’ own committment to lowering its carbon emissions through using wind technology purchasing RECs, and other initiatives.
