Tilana Adds Storage Cloud APIs

March 19, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Backup and storage company Tilana (tilana.com) announced last week that it has introduced the Tilana Cloud (cloud.tilana.com), a software-as-a-service development environment for applications based on Tilana’s continuous data protection, storage and synchronization services.

Offering APIs for server and client, Tilana says the platform provides the functionality, while developers provide the user interface and the storage. The client API allows developers to build solutions for Mac, PC and mobile devices, as well as Web browsers.

The company’s partner website offers up the example of Gate.com’s GateVault, which was launched in Decebmer 2007, and provides customers a remote backup solution with an unusual pricing scheme. Customers pay a one-time $2 per GB fee, and $14.95 per month for access to the remotely stored data, regardless of how much space is used. The service is co-branded and powered by Tilana.

“Tilana Cloud offers developers the complete control needed to build full featured applications that access Tilana real time CDP, versioning, and sync functionality that uses cloud storage independent of us as the OEM,” says CEO Joe Austin, in the announcement. “We believe that this approach to cloud storage presents an entirely new value proposition that can propel a whole new set of SaaS business models, as well as a variety of internal corporate business systems.”

According to the press release, the Tilana Cloud development environment is “currently available only to companies with advanced internal development capabilities.”
