(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Tieto (www.tieto.com) announced on Monday it is building a new, energy efficient data center in Espoo, Finland to meet the increasing demand for IT operating services.
The company began construction of the data center earlier this month, and plans to open the data center by the end of the year.
Initially, Tieto will build a 3,280 square feet of data center space consisting two modules, which it will later expand with independent 1,140 square feet modules.
The data center will use advanced technology and the most energy efficient solutions, says the company.
The planned maximum capacity of the center is 19,680-square-feet, which will double the area of Tieto’s data centers in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The size of the investment is approximately $25.5 million (EUR 18 million), which includes the property, site and the two data center modules.
The company is exploring several different solutions for improving energy efficiency. Various solutions for energy generation are currently being explored.
The target Power Usage Effectiveness index, which represents the energy efficiency or efficiency rate of the new data centre, is 1.2-1.3, while the value for data centres is typically 1.8-3.0.
“It is important for our current customers that certain IT operations will remain close to them geographically,” says Ari Karppinen, Tieto’s Country head of Finland. “Modern data centre technology will enable full-scale production of the growing cloud computing services and the energy-saving virtualization of servers. Through new data centres, Tieto can also respond to the future growth of the market and IT outsourcing in particular.”
Tieto is investing in building new, energy efficient data centers in Finland, Sweden and Russia, including new data centers in the Stockholm area and in Moscow, which are set to be operational in spring 2010.
In addition to energy efficiency, the key requirements set for the new data centers are security and as efficient as possible use of green energy solutions.
