October 21, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), UK technology news site The Register.com (theregister.co.uk) Web site was taken offline this week as a result of a distributed denial of service attack.

The Register reportedly said the attack began at approximately 7:00 a.m. GMT on Wednesday. The site’s performance improved throughout the afternoon.

The company turned off its CSS stylesheets to reduce network traffic and reduce the impact of the attack.

The Register, hosted by Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com) did not offer a reason for why it might have been attacked.
