The Planet Names Execs at HostingCon

July 24, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed and dedicated Web hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com) announced Tuesday at HostingCon in Chicago that it had appointed two new leaders for its core hosting and advanced services business.

The company says Jeff Nelson will serve as general manager the company’s advanced services business – The Planet’s venture into managed services – and Todd Mitchell will serve as general manager of the core hosting business.

On hand at HostingCon to discuss the appointments, The Planet’s Steve Kahan told theWHIR that the two new appointments highlight the separate and unique attention the company intends to pay to each of the two segments of its business.

Coming from six years with Rackspace, says Kahan, he understands the managed hosting business from the perspective that The Planet is trying to reach with its own increased focus on working up-market toward advanced services.

“He understands the best practices related to managed services,” says Kahan, “and he understands them from the perspective of customer needs.”

Mitchell joins The Planet from one of the company’s own most successful resellers, Site 5 (site5.com), where he served as CEO. Kahan says he has a great understanding of the dedicated hosting business.

“It’s rare,” says Kahan, “that a hosting company has general managers focused on the different areas of its business. But it should show that we believe the customers of this two areas have very different needs, and require different kinds of attention.”
