September 17, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com) announced on Wednesday it has joined the Anti-Phishing Working Group (antiphishing.org), an industry association focused on eliminating online identity theft and fraud.

As a corporate-level member of the APWG, The Planet joins more than 1,800 businesses and agencies worldwide in combating the growing problem of phishing, email spoofing and crimeware.

The Planet gains unlimited membership for all its employees and contractors, which includes access to the APWG Work Site and working sub-groups, spanning topics such as Internet best practices, phishing education and policy, subscription to the APWG news and discussion newslist and eligibility to participate in APWG meetings.

The APWG is a global pan-industrial and law enforcement association focused on eliminating the fraud and identity theft that result from phishing, pharming and email spoofing of all types.

“Phishing is one of the biggest problems plaguing users of the Internet today,” says Stan Barber, The Planet’s vice president of network operations. “With our involvement in the APWG, our goal is to stay on the forefront of how to prevent these types of Internet crimes and how best to handle them when they occur. Using this knowledge, we want to provide opportunities for our customers to become better educated so they can avoid becoming victims of online fraud.”

APWG membership is open to qualified solutions providers, financial institutions, online retailers, ISPs and law-enforcement agencies. The Planet joins other technology and telecommunications leaders, including Go Daddy, Cisco, AT&T, Earthlink, Microsoft, McAfee and Symantec.

The APWG will be holding its members-only 2008 Fall General Meeting in Atlanta on October 14 to 16, where it will discuss the crimeware’s evolution, the roles of registrars, registries and DNS in managing phishing attacks, public health approaches to managing the Botnet scourge, behavioral vulnerabilities and human factors that contribute to phishing’s success as well as breaking news on Counter-eCrime tools and resources.

The Planet provides IT Infrastructure solutions, hosting more than 22,000 small- and medium-size businesses and 12 million websites worldwide.

On Tuesday, cloud storage platform provider Nirvanix added another node to its global storage delivery network at The Planet’s D2 data center in Dallas.
