(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) announced on Tuesday it is now offering a third server as part of its portfolio powered by Intel’s next-generation Nehalem microarchitecture.
The announcement follows The Planet’s recent availability of the Dell PowerVault MD3000i, a high-performance storage area network disk array.
Based on the Dell PowerEdge R210 platform, the Xeon 3450 is now the most powerful single-processor server in the company’s portfolio, says the company.
“Our customers consistently look for the latest technology to power mission-critical applications, from e-commerce sites to databases,” says Todd Mitchell, general manager for dedicated hosting and global services. “This new Nehalem-based platform works best as a versatile workhorse, offering an optimal price/performance ratio. Our size allows us to leverage our purchasing power from Dell and offer the newest technology at an affordable rate to our customers.”
The Xeon 3450 SATA is priced at $219 per month and the Xeon 3450 SAS is $244.
For a limited time, The Planet is offering to double the server’s base RAM for free, or upgrade to 10TB of bandwidth for an additional $45 per month.
The new single-processor server features innovative technology with the Xeon 3450 based on next-generation Intel microarchitecture including an integrated high-speed memory controller; power-saving architecture through its integrated power gates, which reduce idle CPU cores to near zero power for greater efficiency; and faster server speed and application performance, enhanced with a CPU frequency of 2.66 GHz and up to 8MB L3 cache.
