The Evolution of Hosting – Where We Are Going, with Equinix

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In the fifth cloud trends track session of day one at HostingCon 2010, Equinix’s Darryl Brown spoke about the future of the cloud in his presentation, “The Evolution of Hosting – Where We Are Going, with Equinix”.

He started with the disclaimer that his presentation would revolve around the end-user’s perspective.

Brown explained that there is a plathorea of opportunities available for service providers and end-users, including new business models for IT services, new type of services, and new sourcing models.

He said that cloud adoption is growing steadily, and as a result, is enabling new market entrants and putting pressure on incumbents, which in turn drives innovation.

He highlighted the many challenges preventing cloud innovation, including the ability to deliver lower costs, deliver reliability comparable to tradtional infrastructure models, readily scale services into new markets and end-users, and provide an end-user experience comparable to traditional service models.

But perhaps the biggest challenges, Brown said, is direct impact of end-user latency, which causes loss of productivity, customer satisfaction, traffic, sales volume, revenue, and leads to an overall negative brand image.

Connectivity between service providers and the end-user is the most critical aspect, stressed Brown, and explained how Equinix’s data center services could potentially solve these issues.

The key elements that determine the service radius are network time, generation time, rendering time, and end-user tolerance, he explained.

Finally, Brown walked attendees through overcoming these challenges, which included understanding the end-users’ needs, developing ecosystems that meet their needs and establishing the right partnerships, and marketing to those business partners.
