(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed infrastructure services provider Terremark (www.terremark.com) is set to open its new “ultra secure” data center in northern Virginia in the first quarter of 2009, according to a report by InformationWeek.com.
The data center is the second of the company’s five planned data centers in Terremark’s 30-acre facility in Culpeper, Virginia. Terremark opened the first of the data center facilities last year.
Each data center building will span 50,000 square feet, in addition to one 72,000-square-foot office building.
All of these buildings are developed to exceed Federal standards for a data communications and hosting facility.
The new facility will help power its Enterprise Cloud service, which launched in June 2008, along with its other managed hosting and colocation services. The cloud platform supports both the federal government’s Data.gov and USA.gov websites.
In addition to the Virginia data centers, the company operates facilities in nearly 12 other worldwide locations.
Terremark’s Virginia facilities are equipped with 12-foot berms and Department of Defense-approved fences that border the perimeter.
The building also have blast-proof exterior walls, and feature motion-sensor cameras that send video feeds to its security office.
Terremark’s “fortress style” data centers are designed to protect its customer base, comprised largely of government agencies and businesses with special security requirements.
These include 9-gage steel mesh beneath the raised floor, as well as floor-to-ceiling concrete walls with locked doors for those customers with classified information.
The data centers’ other security features include armed guards and bomb-sniffing dogs.
