(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator TELEHOUSE America (www.telehouse.com) announced this week that its public peering point the New York International Internet Exchange has doubled its traffic in the last year-and-a-half, consistently exceeding 100Gbps in daily traffic volume during 2011.

The company says the NYIIX facility is the largest public Internet exchange in the New York Metro Market, and one of the 10 largest peering points in the world. Established in 1996, the exchange currently has about 130 active peering members.

“Exceeding 100 gigabits per second of traffic is the result of our continuing ability to increase NYIIX members along with their increasing traffic volume,” says Akio Sugeno, senior director of Internet engineering and operations business development. “Such an accomplishment proves that NYIIX is one of the most important IXP’s in the United States.”

In the announcement, TELEHOUSE calls the new traffic level an “important milestone,” further establishing the strong presence of the company’s connection points around the world.

The company says the NYIIX’s mission is to provide the Internet community with a neutral, scalable peering infrastructure and assure reliable and stable Internet connectivity. It provides fiber connections to well-known carrier hotels at 25 Broadway, 60 Hudson and 111 Eighth, as well as 7 Teleport and 85 10th Avenue, the last one being TELEHOUSE’s most recently built data center, in Chelsea.

TELEHOUSE announced that it had extended the NYIIX connection to the Chelsea data center in February of this year.
