(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Security provider Symantec announced on Monday that it achieved the largest overall SSL certificate growth, with gain of 10,400 total certificates, according to the January 2012 Netcraft survey.

According to a press release by Symantec, the SSL certificate provider leads the EV SSL market with a market share of 65 percent.

This news comes as Symantec denies rumors that its Norton Antivirus software has been hacked.

According to a press release, year over year growth of installed EV SSL certificates is up by 52.25 percent from January 2011.

“In 2011 we witnessed a variety of bad actors targeting certificate authorities ranging from recreational hackers to serious cyber terrorists,” Fran Rosch, vice president, identity and authentication Services, Symantec said in a statement. “As a certificate authority, Symantec is in the very serious business of trust, and maintaining that trust is our highest priority. In 2012, Symantec will continue to lead the charge against cyber criminals by providing a secure online experience, thus making Symantec the clear choice for organizations’ security and SSL certificate needs.”

Symantec says the results from Netcraft’s report illustrate that consumers and organizations are taking the steps to protect themselves from malware, data breaches and other IT security threats through the purchase of SSL and EV SSL certificates.

Other SSL certificate providers in the Netcraft survey include Go Daddy, Network Solutions and Comodo, though Symantec owns about half of the certificate providers in the list through its VeriSign brand.

Recently, Symantec announced that its VeriSign trust seals have been viewed by as many as 800 million people a day in 2011.
