(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data backup and security provider Symantec (www.symantec.com) made several announcements on Tuesday at its Vision 2011 conference including a plan to “modernize” backup and recovery of data with the launch of Symantec V-Ray technology and new backup software Backup Exec.

In March, the Alexa Netcraft survey found that more than 70 percent of the Internet’s top 1,000 websites use SSL certificates from Symantec.

“In our new world of virtualized IT, big data and electronic discovery, traditional approaches to data protection no longer work. However, organizations still want the ability to recover data with greater ease and lower costs,” Deepak Mohan, senior vice president of the Information Management Group, Symantec said in a statement. “Symantec recognizes these challenges and is defining a new vision to help organizations smash backup and recovery windows, drive down costs and reduce complexity.”

Embedded into Symantec NetBackup and BackupExec, Symantec V-Ray technology provides transparency of backup images across physical and virtual environments to ensure efficient protection of systems and applications. Symantec says V-Ray will lower backup storage costs and “gives customers X-Ray vision to easily see, protect, and recover their virtual machines with the same solution that protects their physical environments.”

Symantec has built a recovery model around snapshots to enable administrators “to more easily recover individual files or folders,” according to the press release.

“Customers want choice in how they manage their backup environment, and Symantec is leading the transformation of the backup market with new appliances, cloud and enhanced software for Backup Exec,” Amit Walia, vice president of product management, Symantec stated. “The future of backup will be defined by simplicity, flexibility, and allowing companies to deploy a modern infrastructure that best fits their needs.”

Also launched today, Symantec’s Backup Exec 2010 R3 promises improved backup and deduplication performance in virtualized environments. Later this year, Symantec will release its Backup Exec.cloud for small businesses or remote offices to offload their IT infrastructure. Symantec plans to introduce improvements to its Symantec Enterprise Vault.cloud in June 2011 as well.

Backup Exec 2010 offers SSL support from the agent to the server, according to Symantec. This support offers more security for customers that transmit data across the WAN or to a private cloud, Symantec says.

“We are excited about the opportunities available to us during a time of rapid growth in the cloud market,” Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Symantec.cloud. said. “Leveraging Symantec.cloud’s proven track record of delivering secure, cloud-based services for more than eleven years, we are positioned to lead the industry in a new generation of innovation.”
