November 5, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Sybase Inc. (sybase.com) last week announced its aggressive Open Advantage Campaign for EAServer, offering a 50 percent discount for qualified customers who switch to Sybase’s enterprise class application server.

“In addition to an enterprise-class application server that is half the

regular price, customers who switch to EAServer are also benefiting from a
r
product that is, on average, 250 percent faster than the application server
r
from a leading competitor,” said Billy Ho, senior vice president and general

manager of Sybase’s e-business division.

EAServer, according to Sybase material, handles individual tasks in an
r
e-business environment on an average of 250 percent faster than application
r
servers from other vendors. “This latest performance test is a clear
r
indication of how far Sybase EAServer has raised the bar for application
r
servers,” said Billy Ho. “Once an enterprise is on the Web, it can never
r
control the number of people who use its web-based services. Therefore, it
r
needs to enable all e-business transactions quickly and must be able to
r
service each customer equally well. That is why speed, scalability and high
r
reliability are of such paramount concern to the enterprise.”

The Sybase Performance and Testing Lab conducted extensive performance tests
r
of EAServer and competing application server products. They used a
r
distributed software-testing tool, OpenSTA, capable of simulating hundreds
r
of thousands of virtual users. Testers also used a bookstore application
r
called Nile.com, complete with a typical set of tasks necessary for a
r
real-world electronic commerce site to perform. These included logging a
r
user on, creating a customer account, browsing through a catalog, searching,
r
filling a shopping cart and checking out. Each server underwent 25 tests.

Sybase EAServer performed an average 250 percent faster than leading
r
application server providers. EAServer’s speed is achieved with new
r
performance-enhancing features including object caching, JSP/Servlet page
r
caching, in-memory failover, HotSpot VM support, EJB local interface and Web
r
server redirector plug-ins.

The EAServer Open Advantage program is for companies using and evaluating
r
competitive application servers for current or future development projects.
r
Qualified customers who participate in the Open Advantage program will
r
receive a 50% discount off EAServer and PowerBuilder 8.0 Object Architect,
r
and a 30% discount off EAServer education classes. They will also gain
r
access to e-business analyst white papers focusing on strategies for
r
developing and deploying high performance and cost effective e-business
r
infrastructures, successful Web development methodologies, and utilities
r
designed to speed the development and deployment process for e-business
r
applications.
