SWsoft Names APS Users at HostingCon

July 24, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting software developer SWsoft (swsoft.com) announced Tuesday morning at the HostingCon 2007 event in Chicago that it had added five new independent software vendors to the list of developers building their products to be compatible with the SWsoft-developed Application Packaging Standard.

Many months in development, but officially put into practice earlier this year, APS is a standard for promoting compatibility among hosting related applications and platforms. The standard makes it simple for hosts running APS-compatible platforms, such as SWsoft’s Plesk control panel, to plug in APS-compatible applications, and to offer those applications as a service.

The ISVs announcing support for the standard today include anti-spam software vendor Roaring Penguin Software, small business productivity application provider Smart Online, ecommerce software provider ShopSite, Web analytics software maker CCMedia and invoicing and time tracking software developer FreshBooks.

On hand at HostingCon to discuss the announcement, SWsoft senior product manager Doug Johnson told theWHIR that some of the significance of the announcement was the addition of some popular commercial software to the lineup of developers supporting APS.

“Until now,” he says, “it was all open source things. And there’s a limit to the amount of money you can make selling open source things. When you [introduce] something they can really make some money with, that’s when the hosters get excited.”
