October 9, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — German Web hosting provider STRATO (strato.com) announced on Tuesday that it has reduced its electric power consumption per customer by 30 percent by implementing server automation and virtualization provider SWsoft’s (swsoft.com) Virtuozzo virtualization solution.
Strato says that demand for virtual environments shows the largest increase rate and uses the capacity of a third of the 30,000-plus servers the company owns. As part of a recent expansion of its two data centers in Berlin and Karlsruhe, Germany, STRATO optimized server management using SWsoft solutions, increasing the efficiency of its virtual environments while reducing electric power consumption per customer by 30 percent.
The company says the power savings were achieved through a combination of SWsoft’s management software, intelligent building services engineering and energy-efficient hardware with the latest improvements from Sun Microsystems and AMD.
“SWsoft’s virtualization and automation solutions are just perfect for STRATO’s needs,” says Julien Ardisson, chief technology officer at STRATO. “They ensure that all our customers get the guaranteed capacity for their virtual environment regardless of the physical server. In addition, using Virtuozzo enables us to serve the individual requirements of our customers with greater flexibility.”
Last month, Strato announced that it will completely cut CO2 emissions at its two data centers by January 2008.
