A slide from the survey results, showing an increase in IPv6 usage by ISP customers
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to the results of a survey previewed in September and prepared on behalf of the Number Resource Organization (www.nro.net) made up of the five Regional Internet Registries, a growing number of service providers intend to deploy IPv6 on their networks in 2012.
Most of the organizations charged with distributing IP addresses have made a priority of communicating the importance of IPv6 during recent years, as the available pool of IPv4 addresses grows ever closer to exhaustion.
The survey, titled The Global IPv6 Deployment Monitoring Survey 2011, and conducted by independent policy research organization GNKS Consult, gathered responses from 1,600 international respondents, more than half of which were service providers, according to the press release.
Results indicate that more than 70 percent of respondents plan to deploy IPv6 in the coming year. Among ISPs in particular, the results show growth in deployment, as well as in the desire to promote IPv6 to customers.
“Information such as this is a valuable tool in gauging the progress made by the Internet community in adopting IPv6,” says Raúl Echeberría, chair of the NRO, quoted in the press release. “It is fantastic to see a rapidly growing number of the world’s ISPs committing to IPv6 adoption. In many respects, ISPs are a key driver of IPv6 success, as they are responsible for services delivered over IPv6. It’s encouraging to see so many positive responses from the survey participants, and all Internet stakeholders should take this as a call to action to deploy IPv6 across their networks.”
According to the survey, respondents’ concerns about IPv6 – generally having to do with cost, knowledge, business case and vendor support – are diminishing, with all of them down from 2010 except security concerns, which have grown. The NRO says the security concerns underline the importance of continuing discussion of IPv6 and its security implications in technical forums.
