May 7, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet hardware and software developer Sun Microsystems (Sun.com) announced on Tuesday that it has enhanced its storage solutions, introducing new StorEdge systems and a new StorEdge tape library.

The new products include the high-end Sun StorEdge 9970 and 9980 systems and the StorEdge L5500 tape library, which work with Sun?s StorEdge performance and utilization software suites and server technology to provide a complete end-to-end data center consolidation solution.

Sun also announced that it is working closely with Hitachi Data Systems to ensure the close linking, through open standards, of the two companies? storage software offerings, Sun Storage ONE and Hitachi True North. Standards and interoperability, says Sun, will simplify administration for customers and provide better protection, optimization and management for storage environments.

The high-performance StorEdge 9970 and 9980 systems, says Sun, are supersets of the Hitachi Data Systems? Lightning 9970V and Lightning 9980V products, only available through Sun. The StorEdge systems are optimized for the Solaris Operating Environment, certified for Sun Cluster 3.0 and part of the company?s ongoing certification and performance program. Sun StorEdge systems, says the company, are the only data-center systems supported by a combined Sun and HDS staff in the Sun StorEdge Joint Support Centers.

With the new additions, says Sun, the company has created a seamless server, storage, software and services combination for complete storage data center consolidation, helping customers optimize assets, improve efficiency of operations and reduce the complexity of their storage environments.
