(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Bolstering its cloud computing initiatives, technology firm Sun Microsystems (www.sun.com) has acquired Belgian cloud computing company Q-layer (www.qlayer.com), which specializes in automating cloud deployment and management.

According to Sun’s announcement Wednesday, it will integrate Q-layer’s cloud management simplifying technology into its cloud computing division, which aims to allow users to use the company’s research and technology to more quickly provision and deploy applications, a major component of Sun’s public and private cloud strategy.

“Sun’s open, network-centric approach coupled with optimized systems, software and services provides the critical building blocks for private and public cloud offerings,” Sun Microsystems cloud computing senior vice president and chief sustainability officer David Douglas said in a statement. “Q-layer’s technology and expertise will enhance Sun’s offerings, simplifying cloud management and speeding application deployment.”

Founded in 2005, Q-layer claims to have been the first company to introduce full data center virtualization by integrating server, network and storage virtualization. Its software supports instant provisioning of servers, storage, bandwidth and applications, letting data center managers can increase their data center efficiency and let users scale their own environments to their specific needs.

Data Center Knowledge reported that Q-Layer’s use of virtualization technologies to create a virtual private data center is not unlike Layered Technologies’ use of 3Tera technology.

Q-Layer co-founder Niko Nelissen told WHIR-TV about his company and its technology in a video interview.
