(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A power outage caused by severe storms in the Northern California area led to at least one data center in San Jose experiencing downtime Tuesday morning, according to a report by Data Center Dynamics.
Utility power at NaviSite’s San Jose facility was cut off around 4:45 a.m. PST.
According to a NaviSite statement, service at the data center was down for 40 to 60 minutes before the Web host was able to restore generator power, however, it did not disclose how many customers were affected by the outage.
The company runs 15 data centers in the US and UK, including the 25,000-square-foot San Jose facility, which is used to provide colocation, managed services, email and cloud-based services.
In the most recent post on its blog at 12:06 p.m. PST Tuesday, NaviSite wrote this:
The data center has been and continues to run on generator power. We are still waiting for street power to become available, but will not switch back over until we have an understanding of what caused the original issue. Our engineers continue to work on bringing our customers systems back online.
Another company affected by the power outage was eBay-owned hosting service, ProStores (www.prostores.com), according to the company’s Twitter feed, although it is still unclear which data center the company’s infrastructure is hosted in.
According to local utility firm PG&E, 17 outages were found to be affecting an estimated 500 customers in the area, as of about 10:30 a.m. PST.
