Stalled Amazon Data Center in Oregon to Resume

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Amazon (www.amazon.com) has revealed that it will reits postponed data center in Boardman, Oregon, will restart in the “not too distant future,” according to a report from local TV station KEPR.

If all goes as planned, the $100-million site project will be completed in the third quarter of 2010, says Port of Morrow general manager Gary Neal.

The TV station recently shot footage of the Amazon site at the Port of Morrow, a 9,000-acre industrial park along the Columbia River that’s about 160 miles east of Portland.

The 116,700-square-foot building is to be constructed over six phases, with two data centers to follow.

The half-built data center project was put on hold in August, according to a report by InformationWeek.com.

And while the company did not offer a reason as to why the project was put on hold, an Amazon spokesperson told InformationWeek.com at the time that the company was “continuously evaluate the requirements for our infrastructure capacity and are judicious in our investment decisions.

Amazon has not revealed what it plans to do with the data center, but it likely involves the company’s rapidly growing cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services.
