SPEC Releases Green Server Benchmark

January 2, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Server performance benchmark provider Standard Performance Evaluation (spec.org) announced on Monday it has released a test suite that is designed to enable buyers to shop for servers according to their energy efficiencies.

Five server vendors helped develop the new standard, as did Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

The US Environmental Protection Agency is also developing a similar standard, creating a version of its Energy Star rating for servers. Klaus-Dieter Lange, a senior performance engineer at Hewlett-Packard in charge of the SPEC subcommittee that developed the benchmark, says he believes the EPA “will adapt what we came up with.”

“Having real, measured data is a vast step forward,” says Jonathan Koomey, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an adviser to the EPA.
