SoftLayer Sponsors Next Week's European Game Developer Conference

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On-demand data center services provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) has announced its participation as a sponsor of this year’s Game Developer Conference Europe in Cologne, Germany.

Held August 16 to 18 at the Cologne Congress Center East, GDC Europe is the premier conference for video game and computer developers in Europe, providing a venue for industry professionals from emerging start-ups to major studios. In addition to Cologne, SoftLayer will be a multi-event sponsor of 2010 Game Development Conferences including San Francisco, Vancouver, and Austin.

“GDC Europe is a great event for SoftLayer,” SoftLayer chief strategy officer George Karidis said in a statement. “It gives us the opportunity to connect with a thriving community of developers and programmers. SoftLayer’s robust hardware and network resources create ideal solutions for the gaming industry, whether it be for application development or Web hosting.”

The Game Developers Conference attracts attendees from all facets of the gaming industry to explore business development strategies and best practices.

Earlier this year, SoftLayer sponsored the second annual GDC Canada (www.gdc-canada.com) conference, held in Vancouver.

Also in an effort to make itself more visible (within the gaming industry so to speak), SoftLayer provided the streaming infrastructure for the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament live on the Internet in April.

Earlier this month, SoftLayer won FindMyHost.com’s Editors’ Choice Award for its game servers in addition to its wins in the cloud computing, Web hosting, reseller hosting, and dedicated hosting categories.

In a blog post from last year, SoftLayer’s Philip Chung postulated that - beyond just providing a service - SoftLayer and other data center providers are at least partly responsible for propelling online gaming to its current state.

“Everyone has heard the theory that gaming has pushed the boundaries of computing, but I believe it is more likely that datacenters like SoftLayer have pushed the boundaries of networking and helped make advanced tech more affordable to the ravenous mass of online gamers. The number of mega-powered game servers hosted by SoftLayer is a testament to the unholy integration of gaming and networking, and to that all of us closet gamers must say, ‘moar please!’[sic],” he wrote.
