SoftLayer Offers VMware ESX Hypervisor, Adding Flexibility and Efficiency

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On-demand data center and hosting services provider SoftLayer (www.softlayer.com) has begun offering VMware ESX (www.vmware.com) for server virtualization to its portfolio of software services, giving customers access to a bare-metal hypervisor that abstracts processor, memory, storage, and networking resources to create multiple virtual machines from a single physical machine.

According to SoftLayer’s announcement, VMware ESX is available to be added to any dedicated server through SoftLayer’s fully-automated customer portal. Hypervisor-based virtualization puts a level of software — the  hypervisor — on top of the physical server. The hypervisor allocates portions of the physical server’s hardware resources to create multiple virtual servers that are fully independent and secure.

Each VM can run separate operating systems and applications, providing companies of all sizes with a powerful foundation for building a high-performance, cost-efficient, and reliable IT infrastructure by pooling resources, decreasing power, cooling, and floor space requirements. It also increases server utilization rates compared to traditional servers because multiple operations that only take a fraction of the server’s resources can be run simultaneously on a single physical server. 

According to independent research, businesses using VMware can lower their operational expenditures by up to $1,000 per server, and let them deploy applications faster.

VMWare ESX also can be used as part of the greater VMware vSphere platform for building complete, enterprise-class cloud infrastructures.
