(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A week after on-demand data center and hosting services provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) launched CloudLayer content delivery network and storage, it has added computing as part of its new CloudLayer line of cloud services, letting customers launch cloud-based computing instances in as few as five minutes.
CloudLayer Computing is built on the Citrix (www.citrix.com) XenServer virtualization platform and brings enterprises massive scalability and unique opportunities for their IT environments, according to SoftLayer’s Monday announcement.
“From day one, SoftLayer was created to bring customers IT power when, how, and where they need it,” SoftLayer chief executive officer Lance Crosby said in a statement. “CloudLayer Computing is the next step in our evolution. It leverages all of our advantages and expertise in on-demand data center services to provide cloud computing that delivers as promised. There isn’t any other cloud computing service truly like it.”
CloudLayer Computing instances can be seamlessly integrated with dedicated servers, automated services, and other CloudLayer services to create a fully unified and unique computing solution. It also offers an image library for accelerated provisioning and management, full access and control through a Customer Portal and API, as well as full virtualization capability through virtualized networking, security, storage, and management that optimizes “beyond the box” applications.
Citrix virtualization and management division chief technology officer Simon Crosby said CloudLayer service offers enterprise-class, secure cloud infrastructure, which is also dynamic, manageable, and cost effective. “The cloud-proven scalability, performance, and support for secure isolation and multi-tenancy featured in XenServer provides a powerful virtual infrastructure upon which SoftLayer can deliver a rich set of enterprise services,” Crosby said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with SoftLayer to help transform cloud economics for the enterprise.”
In addition to offering on-demand computing instances, CloudLayer Computing lets SoftLayer customers build their own cloud computing environments from the ground up. SoftLayer dedicated servers can be paired with leading cloud solutions such as the Citrix Cloud Center (better known as Citrix C3) to customize and manage environments for providing online applications and other web-based services.
Monthly billing is based on hourly usage or a monthly rate with no long-term commitment, providing users flexibility.
