SoftLayer Launches Cloud Storage and CDN

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On-demand data center and hosting services provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) has launched CloudLayer, a new line of cloud services that gives individuals and enterprises powerful options for scaling their IT resources, maximizing data accessibility and reducing their total cost of IT.

CloudLayer Storage and CloudLayer CDN were developed using SoftLayer’s automated services and cloud infrastructure expertise, and provide advantages and capabilities not found with other cloud service providers, according to the company’s Monday announcement. While available as standalone solutions, CloudLayer services also offer seamless integration with SoftLayer’s dedicated servers and automated services, and can be controlled through the SoftLayer Customer Portal or an API, offering unprecedented interoperability and efficiency.

“The capabilities and vision that it takes to do cloud right is where SoftLayer has long proven its expertise,” SoftLayer chief executive officer Lance Crosby said in a statement. “We aren’t jumping on the cloud bandwagon. We didn’t create CloudLayer to leverage our excess data center capacity. We developed CloudLayer because it’s a natural evolution of what we do. It gives customers the IT they need, when they need it, with all of the flexibility and efficiency of on-demand IT resources without any compromise in performance, security, or control.”

Offering immediate scalability, the CloudLayer family of services are able to be added in real time to accommodate unexpected, temporary changes in demand. Additionally, they are available on “pay as you go” or monthly packages with no long-term commitments.

By serving content from a node that is closest to the end user, CloudLayer CDN lets online service providers deliver content to their end users faster and more efficiently using a network of 21 cloud-connected nodes, running advanced software for organizing, storing, and streaming data. This not only minimizes the distance the data has to travel, but also mitigates network traffic jams and decreases latency.

CloudLayer CDN is available with Origin Pull or POP Pull delivery strategies, letting customers optimize their costs and end user experience. Additionally, CloudLayer CDN includes: content management and monetization tools to protect copyrighted content; performance-neutral growth to minimize the impact of increased content demand; broader geographic reach to optimize the speed and reliability of content delivery regardless of destination; and support for high-quality content and rich-media.

CloudLayer Storage provides cloud-based data storage for storing, managing, and sharing data in any file format, with full access and control. It can be accessed through WebDAV or a Web 2.0 browser interface, as well as through native clients that SoftLayer has developed for Windows, BlackBerry, iPhone, and Windows Mobile devices.

CloudLayer Storage data is stored using SoftLayer’s StorageLayer solution, a unified storage environment for the ultimate level of security and reliability, offering 256-bit AES encryption, SSL encryption, role-based permissions, and share expiration.

SoftLayer chief technology officer Nathan Day said the company has worked hard to give CloudLayer unique capabilities, as well as the ease-of-use and reliability that enterprises demand. “With the extensive infrastructure and proprietary solutions that SoftLayer has built, and with modern virtualization technologies, CloudLayer truly delivers the cloud experience that the industry has been promising,” Day said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what our customers accomplish with it.”
