(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On-demand virtual data center services provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) has added SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell (www.novell.com) to its portfolio of server operating systems, giving all customers an enterprise-grade distribution of the open source Linux OS for no additional cost.
SUSE provides the open source benefits of Linux along with important enterprise features, including support for Microsoft Management Tools and Xen virtual machines, as well as the scalability to run unlimited virtual machines.
SoftLayer is using Novell ZENworks Linux Management for the installation and management of all SUSE deployments. SUSE can be ordered and provisioned on-demand, in real time for any SoftLayer server through the company’s customer portal or API.
“In today’s economic climate, there is an even greater need for enterprises to lower their total cost of IT,” SoftLayer chief technology officer Nathan Day said in a statement. “But no one can afford to do that at the cost of power or stability. SUSE answers both challenges. We’re committed to bringing our customers current, effective solutions like SUSE.”
SoftLayer has also been the subject of a recent case study conducted by Intel, which outlines how SoftLayer runs Parallels (www.parallels.com) Virtuozzo Containers software on multi-core Intel Xeon processors to provide maximum performance, increased energy efficiency, and lower total cost of ownership.
In October, WHIR TV interviewed SoftLayer chairman and chief executive officer Lance Crosby, where he discussed the company’s various virtualization and cloud initiatives.
