SoftLayer Adds 10GB Fiber Link

January 29, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider SoftLayer (softlayer.com) announced on Monday it has significantly expanded its network-within-the-network topology by connecting its Dallas, Texas and Seattle, Washington data centers with a dedicated 10GB fiber link. SoftLayer’s private and public networks are now both connected between the cities via private, 10GB point-to-point connections, providing the fastest connection with the lowest latency.

The expansion gives customers a broader range of options and advantages, including the ability to transfer an unlimited amount of data between cities securely and free of charge. Additionally, customers using StorageLayer will have improved failover capabilities, and can now access the private network via out-of-band VPN connections in either Dallas or Seattle.

“This level of control and enterprise grade capabilities are new to mass market hosting—they’ve just been too expensive for many businesses to deploy,” says George Karidis, SoftLayer chief strategy officer. “This is only the first of many cross-data center services that we have slated to go live in 2008. We will continue to ramp up our virtual data center services and deliver even more sophisticated IT services to all of our customers.” The company says it plans to release many other products in the first quarter of 2008 that focus on geographical redundancy, improved performance and data protection, as well as SoftLayer’s central goal to provide fully outsourced IT operations and “serverless” operations for startups and mature businesses.

Softlayer announced earlier this month it named three new employees for key management roles.
