June 18, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider SherpaHost (sherpahost.com) announced on Monday that the demand for .mobi domain name extensions has increased because of the growing anticipation over the Apple iPhone’s (apple.com/iphone) debut on June 29.
SherpaHost says that excitement over the iPhone has drawn attention to the .mobi top-level domain, which is specifically dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile devices, and has increased its demand. One of the reasons is because a significant feature of the iPhone is its Wi-Fi component, which enables users to access Internet hotspots as well as the phone’s ability to support HTML.
However, according to Apple the iPhone doesn’t require mobile-friendly Web sites as it uses the Safari browser to surf the Internet and “see any Web page the way it was designed to be seen.” If this is the case, the significance of a .mobi domain to an iPhone remains to be seen.
SherpaHost says it currently offers services that support .mobi domains, including mobile phone Web site design and Web hosting.
