ServInt Announces Green Initiative

June 17, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider ServInt (servint.net) announced on Tuesday its “green” initiative of providing climate-positive hosting solutions by deploying multiple green methodologies to help customers operate with minimal environmental impact.

ServInt says its entire line of virtual private server hosting services is backed by a commitment to offset the total carbon footprint of the VPS by at least 110 percent.

The web host will fulfill its carbon-offsetting goals through large-scale reforestation campaigns operated by American Forests (americanforests.org).  Striving for a complete climate-positive approach, ServInt says it calculates its reforestation commitment not only on the energy consumption of the host servers, but on its entire VPS infrastructure.

This includes compensating for all core routing and switching equipment, for cooling and redundant power operations, and for an extensive back-LAN that provides customers with free backups and centralized update repositories. ServInt’s green initiative also sets company guidelines to responsible recycling of hardware at end of life. The company says it recycles all recyclable components and meets or exceeds environmental standards for the disposal of all non-recyclable hazardous components. Additionally, ServInt’s SuperVPS and UltimateVPS hosting plans now feature low per-capita energy consumption through efficient virtualization. These services use Dell low-voltage server hardware, enabling the web host to provide high-performance while operating with a much smaller carbon footprint. Both SuperVPS and UltimateVPS are strong alternatives to the traditional dedicated server, says ServInt, providing customers with increased redundancy without compromising the computing performance of a traditional dedicated server. ”The web hosting industry is a major contributor to global energy consumption and carbon emissions,” says Reed Caldwell, ServInt Founder and CEO. “ServInt is committed to offering hosting services that have a positive effect on the environment.”

There have been many “green” hosting announcements in the past week, including IBM partnering with web hosting provider RackForce Networks and gigaCENTER Services to help build Canada’s largest green data center.

Earlier this month, HP Labs announced plans to create sustainable data centers that strives to reduce the carbon footprint by 75 percent, while Softlaye received its first delivery of servers under a new server packaging program that cuts packing materials by 80 percent
