July 29, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Online domain name market Sedo (sedo.com) has announced chief strategy officer Matt Bentley will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities after six-year tenure with the company in a variety of senior roles.

According to the announcement Tuesday, Bentley will transition out of his operational role at Sedo, starting August 1, but he will remain close to the company in a non-operative role as Strategic Advisor.

“Together with Sedo’s founders, Matt has played an important role in helping Sedo become the recognized, global domain marketplace leader it is today,” Sedo chief executive officer and co-founder Tim Schumacher said. “Matt will no doubt continue to be a tremendous asset to Sedo in his new advisory role.”

Bentley joined Sedo as director of international operations in 2002 when it had no more than a dozen employees. Over the following years, Bentley played a central role in expanding Sedo’s global footprint outside of Germany, in what would become the world’s largest domain name marketplace with more than 11.5 million listings.

In 2004, along with Sedo co-founder and president Ulrich Essmann, Bentley launched Sedo.com, Sedo’s US subsidiary, where he served as CEO for two years before returning to Germany to assume his role as CSO.

Bentley also played a key role in shaping Sedo’s successful domain parking product, forging one of the industry’s first parking partnerships with Google, and managing the launch of Sedo’s premium brand for domain professionals, SedoPro.

“I’m definitely going to miss working with the many great people there, but the time was right for me to find a new challenge,” Bentley said in a statement. “Sedo is a strong organization, and I expect to see the company continue to thrive at the forefront of the domain industry.”

Sedo director of business development Mark Klein recently talked to the WHIR about his session at HostingCon 2008 where he discussed the growth of the secondary domain market and what web hosts and domain registrars do to tap into this market to increase customer loyalty and revenue.
