Sedo Chosen to Auction Sex.com Domain

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Online domain marketplace and premium domain name broker Sedo (www.sedo.com) has entered into an agreement to privately broker the sale of what many consider the world’s most valuable domain name, Sex.com, which previously sold for $14 million, proving the adage that sex sells.

According to Sedo’s announcement last week, it has landed a deal with the cash-strapped owner of Sex.com, Escom, to sell the lucrative domain.

Descriptive domains that define a category have historically been the most valuable properties on the Web. Not surprisingly, “Sex” continues to be one of the most searched for terms on the Web and its mainstream appeal has only grown over the past few years.

“It is an extremely rare opportunity that a domain name of this caliber becomes available for sale,” Kathy Nielsen, director of sales at Sedo, said in a statement. “We are very pleased to be chosen as the exclusive brokerage firm to represent this domain sale. Short, descriptive domains are an amazing marketing vehicle. The sale of sex.com presents potential buyers with a once in a lifetime opportunity. The possibilities for this domain are endless and will enable the new owner to instantly define itself as a leader in its industry.”

The new owner of this domain (and two related trademark registrations also being auctioned by Sedo) will get a clear competitive advantage as a market leader, dramatically enhanced organic search rankings, tremendous traffic generated from direct navigation and an unsurpassed ability to drive online marketing and branding initiatives.

Escom chief executive officer Del Anthony said his company is excited to be working with Sedo, tapping into Sedo’s “vast experience, expertise with high value domain names, credibility and worldwide network of clients.” He stated that Sedo will help Escom get “a price for the sex.com domain name and its related trademarks that reflects its true value as the best domain name in the world.”

Sex.com was reportedly sold to Escom LLC in January 2006 for $14 million, making it the highest priced domain sale on record. Facing bankruptcy, in February 2010, Sex.com was ordered to be sold at a foreclosure auction. Escom’s creditors, however, filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition against Escom in March, helping to reverse the foreclosure auction, and prevent a possible loss of value.
