(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Security firm Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Monday it is offering free trials of all VeriSign SSL Certificates, including the free trial of its fully functional Extended Validation (EV) SSL.

The competition for the SSL certificates market has become more intense recently with Symantec’s acquisition of VeriSign’s security operations – including GeoTrust (www.geotrust.com) – earlier this year. Last week, in an interview with the WHIR, Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) president and COO Warren Adelman said he isn’t worried about losing customers to Symantec.

While Adelman was referring to the recent GeoTrust campaign offering Go Daddy customers a free GeoTrust SSL certificate in exchange for their Go Daddy SSL certificate, Symantec’s new promotion may offer more incentive for customers.

According to Symantec, website owners can try any VeriSign SSL certificate for 30 days for free, and businesses that don’t need SSL encryption can try the VeriSign Trust Seal free for 60 days. Symantec recently announced its Trust Seal has grown in popularity, with more than 100,000 websites displaying the seal.

“Even just a few weeks after engaging VeriSign SSL and EV SSL Certificates, online businesses frequently measure impressive uplifts in conversion rates, orders and revenue,” said Tim Callan, head of trust services product marketing at Symantec. “This is because consumers look for reassurance online, and nothing reassures them more than the sight of the world’s most recognized trust mark. Add the increased confidence that comes with the EV SSL green address bar, and businesses have a powerful toolkit for building trust.  With this free trial for all of our SSL, EV SSL and Trust Seal products, Symantec is offering businesses the opportunity to measure the real-world return they get from these products at absolutely no risk.”

VeriSign’s SSL and EV SSL certificates protect online transactions and communications, offering additional reassurance by independently authenticating the identity of the site’s operators. Symantec says all VeriSign trusted sites are scanned daily for malware.

According to Symantec, online businesses have seen transactions increase by an average of 18 percent after deploying VeriSign EV SSL Certificates.

A report in June stated that VeriSign leads the global SSL marketplace with a 44.4 percent share of the total market. The company also claims 70 percent of the EV SSL market.
