A chart shows the top ten countries of origin of spam
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – A new report by email security firm eleven (www.eleven.de) finds that there has been an 89 percent upsurge in spam levels compared to July 2011.
According to the report, eleven recorded an increase of more than half in September. Spam levels in September back at 74 percent of the level prior to the takedown of botnet Rustock on March 16.
In September 89.6 percent of all emails were spam. That level was 78.7 percent in May.
Email ads for online casinos was the most poular spam topic in September and constituted for 53.7 percent of all spam in September. Pharmaceutical spam had a 10 percent share, a 16 percent decline from July.
Spammers took advantage of current events in August and September. For example, stories about the revolutions in Libya used as bait to launder money. Spammers also used the rumors about a new iPhone for spam campaigns in September, including contests that turned out to be a subscription ploy. Facebook was also a topic of spam emails.
Most spam emails come from Asia, Eastern Europe and South America. According to the report, six of the top ten spammers in September came from Asia, three from Eastern Europe and one from South America.
India is the top country of origin of spam in September, according to the press release.
Emails used for distributing malware increased by 348 percent in September. Trojans dominated the field of malware dissemination.
