Securing the Cloud with Bob Angus of Symantec

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In a Wednesday afternoon session, Bob Angus of Symantec delivered a presentation on securing the cloud.

He says there are a lot of security threats out there on the Internet, and customers don’t want to have to worry about dealing with them – that is, as they move to the cloud, they would like security and compliance issues to be taken care of for them.

Sharing some stats to prove out the threat situation, he says more than 40,000 websites are compromised each week, and instances of “malvertising” increased by 250 percent in the last quarter.

Symantec’s vision for a secure cloud has a lot to do with the trust products it picked up with Verisign, including its trust products for websites. And it includes trust products for the network and for the individual end user and their devices.

In a study of companies outsourcing their mission critical projects, only 20 percent involved their info security team, 25 percent didn’t even consider security, and more than 50 percent have yet to implement a process for data security.

The threats faced by companies putting their work on the cloud, says Angus, include user access, data segregation, regulatory compliance, data location, availability and recovery, investigative support , viability and longevity.

Dealing with those risks should mean including strategies for involving experts, but also from service providers  imposing standards and being transparent about where data is beings stored.

A big part of this is obviously selling Symantec products, which include SSL certs, but also the site seal, and malware scanning product.

He says there are four big opportunities for hosts, related to security. The first is standing out with your security policies, second is building trust in your brand, third is encrypting your site and services with SSL, and fourth is securing and managing the services of your customers.
