January 11, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Secure Computing Corp. (securecomputing.com), a provider of access control solutions, announced yesterday a new firewall and VPN product, the Sidewinder Appliance.

The Sidewinder appliance is built on Dell Computer Corp.’s rack-dense
r

PowerEdge server platform. Through Dell’s Custom Factory Integration
r

service, Dell will customize the hardware configuration, pre-install the
r

software, and arrange for delivery of the Sidewinder Appliance to worldwide
r

customers. The Sidewinder Appliance is available with Secure’s standard 24×7
r

support and includes a 3-year next-business-day hardware warranty.
r

r

“In today’s cost-conscious IT environments, customers are demanding that
r

their security solutions be easy to install, administer and run at network
r

speeds,” said Chris Christiansen, program vice president, Internet
r

infrastructure and security software at IDC. “Secure Computing has delivered
r

a firewall appliance that specifically targets the needs of today’s IT
r

customers.”
r

r

Newly refined Mail and DNS settings allow Sidewinder to drop seamlessly into
r

any IP network at start-up, and because Sidewinder doesn’t require security
r

patches for every new type of attack, it saves time associated with
r

maintaining the software and operating system, the company says. A
r

single-site or worldwide deployment of Sidewinders can be centrally managed
r

from any Windows platform.
r

r

Sidewinder has been accepted for the EAL4+ Common Criteria evaluation, which
r

includes a U.S. National Security Agency penetration test and vulnerability
r

analysis. EAL4+ is Common Criteria’s highest Evaluation Assurance Level
r

available for certifying firewalls. Sidewinder’s hybrid architecture
r

encompasses the entire range of firewall security mechanisms including
r

stateful inspection, circuit level proxies, application filtering, secured
r

servers, and real-time Strikeback alerts.
r

r

The Sidewinder Appliance is available now, through Secure Computing and its
r

network of resellers and managed service providers. Sidewinder Appliance
r

prices range from $5,900 to $23,900.
