The news comes after several months of warnings and threats of legal action from SCO – made against both companies and users. Last May, SCO sent letters to 1,500 companies warning them that they are allegedly in violation of its intellectual property rights and offered licenses in order to avoid possible legal action. In January, SCO sent letters to 6,000 UNIX licensees, asking them to certify compliance with all UNIX source code agreements.

According to the report, Bruce Perens, a founder of the Open Source Initiative dismissed the suit saying it would do little more than speed up SCO’s demise.
