(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Storage technology developer Scality (www.scality.com) announced on Wednesday that its technology is being employed by synchronization and collaboration specialist TeamDrive (www.teamdrive.com) in the delivery of a file sharing and synchronization solution for private clouds.
A Drop-Box-like service that features “the highest possible standards of security,” the TeamDrive solutions uses Scality’s scalable RING Organic Storage solution, along with TeamDrive’s own built-in encryption technology. Users can choose to host synchronized files on the TeamDrive cloud, or on their own servers, should compliance requirements dictate.
The solution is priced similarly to Drop Box – free, with for-pay upgrades to higher storage limits.
“Today’s agile enterprise needs to find ways to enable its people to share documents easily, which is a real challenge to do securely. While there are public cloud offerings for sharing, many enterprises are required to maintain total control of their data and keep it from leaving their network – no matter how secure that public cloud appears to be. The service offered by Scality and TeamDrive delivers a secure, cost-efficient and user-friendly alternative,” said Jérôme Lecat, Scality’s CEO, quoted in the press release.
According to the announcement, TeamDrive’s solution has been awarded the Seal of Privacy by Germany’s Data Protection Commissioner’s Office.
“As a result of the Scality integration, we can offer our customers greater options for storage with the TeamDrive cloud and enterprise hosting environment,” said Volker Oboda, TeamDrive CEO, also quoted in the announcement. “The Scality option provides globally cost-effective storage including high performance, robust data protection, high availability, and scalability. And, since Scality storage can be located on-premises or in Scality-powered public clouds, deployment options are flexible, in line with the TeamDrive offering.”
The companies will be showcasing the solution for the first time in Scality’s booth at the SNW – Powering the Cloud event in Frankfurt, Germany, November 2nd and 3rd, as well as presenting the solution during a session.
While an email from Scality suggested there might be an opportunity for hosts or telcos to distribute the software (possibly to customers running private cloud), such an opportunity isn’t made explicit anywhere in the announcement or on the TeamDrive site.
