Russian Registrars ISPREG and SBNames Lose ICANN Accreditation

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The not-for-profit body responsible for the assignment of domain names and IP addresses has terminated its Registrar Accreditation Agreements with both ISPREG Ltd and SBNames Ltd for failure to comply with the requirements of the agreement.

The registrar agreements for both firms were initiated by Alexey Petrov of Moscow. According to documents sent to Petrov from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (www.icann.org), ISPREG and SBNames both failed to pay more than $8,300 in accreditation fees each. This failure to pay is a requirement of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, the contract between ICANN and registrars that governs the registration of domain names.

Last week, registrar DNGLOBE was cut off for failing to pay more than $2,200 in accreditation fees, and also neglecting to provide public access to data on registered names.

To protect those that registered domains through registrars that have violated ICANN’s agreement, a process has been initiated to identify a qualified and accredited registrar to take over management of the domain names through a bulk transfer.

ISPREG and SBNames are the latest deviant registrars that has been made an example of by ICANN, which seems to be taking increasingly bold moves to keep the Internet free of individuals who shirk their responsibilities as domain registrars.
