November 9, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Online security experts say that Russia-based Web hosting provider Russian Business Network has gone offline.
According to Trend Micro, the hosting provider accused of hosting some of the worst criminal activities the Internet has to offer, went dark around 10 p.m. EST on Tuesday after researchers found that the routing information for RBN’s IP addresses had been withdrawn.
Although it isn’t clear precisely what caused the downing, Trend speculates that problems with an upstream Internet service provider might be to blame. Reports from the Washington Post claim the RBN has been in trouble since the newspaper publicized its activities in October, causing upstream providers Tiscali.uk and C41 to drop the hosting provider.
Although RBN seems to be gone, Trend Micro believes the hosting provider is simply laying low as it shifts to a new area and diversifies its back-end infrastructure. The Spamhaus Project recently posted information that indicates RBN may have already laid claim to IP blocks located in China, particularly in Shanghai.
Recent malware events RBN has been blamed for include October’s Adobe PDF exploit, and the hacking of the Bank of India in September.
Last month, RBN was blacklisted by Spamhaus for allegedly facilitating online criminal activity.
