(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator rmsource (www.rmsource.com) announced on Tuesday it will open a new fier 3 data center in Durham, North Carolina that is scheduled to go online in the fourth quarter of 2009.
According to rmsource chief marketing officer Marc Crawford, the data center will be used to extend the company’s private cloud initiative.
More specifically, Crawford said it will be used for “everything from continuation of our SaaS model (to) unified messaging and voice over IP services, along with allowing enterprise to house their internal applications there.”
rmsource will provide dedicated core computing resources out of the data center to its customers instead of shared resources.
The hurricane-rated data center will feature redundant power, cooling and connectivity, and focus on “affordable, secure and highly managed cloud services providing enterprise caliber IT capabilities for the small and medium businesses.”
The company has not yet released the details about the amount of raised-floor area or power availability of the facility.
The data center will be housed in a former telecommunications facility, which rmsource is currently working on retrofitting.
rmsource’s strategic infrastructure partners in the project are HP, NetApp, Cisco and Vmware.
Durham is one of three cities that house North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, which has more than 170 organizations related to the research and development field.
Perhaps the largest data center build announcement came from Apple last month, when the company unveiled plans for a new $1 billion data center.
The project promises to provide Apple with around $46 million in tax incentives over the next nine years.
