May 30, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Riverhead Networks (Riverhead.com), a provider of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection solutions, and managed hosting and IT outsourcing firm Cervalis (Cervalis.com) said today they had teamed up to demonstrate the successful mitigation of a DDoS attack in a secured hosting environment. The companies said the test demonstration was the first of its kind.

The trial environment was built using Cervalis’ network armed with Riverhead Guard, which offers active protection against DDoS attacks. Ten different DDoS attacks were launched against a target server and routers while measuring the service level to legitimate end users of the attacked sites. The companies said the test results proved that sites located within the DDoS-protected environment experienced uninterrupted flow of legitimate traffic, even at the peak of the attacks.

“Riverhead has convinced us with unquestionable proof that real-time protection from DDoS attacks is feasible,” said Eddie Rabinovitch, Vice President of Global Networks and Infrastructure Operations at Cervalis. “We plan to offer this unique service to our customers.”

DDoS attacks crash systems by flooding servers or networks with useless traffic, preventing legitimate from gaining access to those resources.
