The site was apparently brought down by a denial of service (DoS) attack launched by computers infected by a variant (MyDoom.F) of the MyDoom virus. The variant, which emerged a few weeks after the virus first appeared, could pose a recurring problem because it is programmed to launch a DoS attack against RIAA between the 17th and 22nd days of each month.

According to Netcraft, the latest incident is the second major outage to the RIAA Web site caused by a DoS attack. The RIAA site went down for four days in July 2002, Netcraft said.
