December 12, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Research organization Meta Group predicted this week that software giant Microsoft will offer Linux for Web services and server software by the end of 2004, as a concession to customer demands.

The company predicted that by 2007, 45 percent of new servers will use Linux, rather than Windows-based applications, particularly for database, Web hosting and email functions. Meta Group says it believes that, as a result, Microsoft will respond by adding proprietary apps, including .NET, to a Linux environment by late 2004. The company said back-end applications like SQL Server, IIS and Exchange, could be included in a Microsoft Linux conversion.

Meta Group says pricing might be affected by this type of shift, with Microsoft possibly changing pricing structures to be more competitive with Linux.

Microsoft denied the claim, saying it would not be engineering server software for Linux, and would continue to bet on the Windows platform. The company also said Windows provides lower long-term costs for customers than competing platforms, and greater business value in the long run.
