(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — An Ethiopian review and opinion journal, The Ethiopian Review, published on Friday a list of the top 25 web hosting companies “leading the pack in Nigeria” based on ranking information from WebHosting.Info (www.webhosting.info).
According to the article, the list was compiled to give readers an idea of what web hosting companies they could choose from when registering for domain names or purchasing web hosting packages within Nigeria.
The rankings, which were based on market share statistics gathered on November 11, put Nairahost (www.nairahost.com) as the top hosting provider in Nigeria with a share of 10.9 percent of the market and a total of 1,130 total domain names registered. Mcreal (www.mcreal.net) followed with a market share of 10.8 percent and 1,123 total domains registered.
The third, fourth and fifth spots are filled by Syskay (www.syskay.com) with a share of 9.9 percent, Weblagos (www.weblagos.com) and Nairadomains (www.nairadomains.com).
Despite the numbers gathered by WebHosting.Info, the article made a point of mentioning other notable Nigerian hosting providers, like Linkserve (www.linkserve.com.ng), which existed before Nairahost but ranked in 16th place, and Web4Africa (www.web4africa.com) which didn’t even make it onto the list even though it is one of the few web hosting companies in Nigeria that offers an ATM card payment option.
Despite the publication being an Ethiopia-based one, the author made note to mention that the reason it focused on the top web hosting options in Nigeria is because “the vampire regime in Ethiopia has outlawed ownership of web hosting and Internet services by private companies in Ethiopia, while other African countries, such as Nigeria, are working to catch up with developed countries.”
The “vampire regime” refers to what is locally known as the Woyanne (Tigrigna for “rebel” or “bandit”), or Tigrean People Liberation Front, which is the current ruling party in Ethiopia. The TPLF has been in power in 1991 and is headed by party leader Meles Zenawi.
The author shared some final thoughts towards the end of the article, which outlined the idea that most of the top 25 Nigerian web hosting companies offered “interesting features and packages.”
But the factor that would indicate real progression within the Nigerian web hosting market would be the emergence of unlimited hosting packages “like the world’s most popular web hosting companies,” which is interesting considering the word “unlimited” raises some red flags for people in more developed hosting industries, like Europe and North America, to consider these types of hosting offerings with a little more scrutiny.

The last paragraph is so true, many web hosting customers do get coerced into unlimited web hosting services, where as, the fact as you have pointed out is to be suspicious of a web hosting company that promises unlimited webs pace, because unlimited web hosting/bandwidth isn’t directly possible, even if you have your own data center…
Further more, a 500 MB of web space is well enough for someone new to web hosting and that is being generous, a new Joomla.org installation only requires 15MB of web space and I believe Wordpress.org is about that as well and a considerable amount of Nigerian websites are build on wordpress framework.
