Cliff Stanford, who also founded Demon Internet, is accused of intercepting emails to John Porter from Porter’s mother, Tesco heiress and former politician Dame Shirley Porter.

Dame Porter was involved in a scandal in the 1980s, under which council homes in Westminster were sold to potential Conservative party voters. She was ordered to pay £37m after an inquiry into the affair, but insisted she didn’t have the money. According to Silicon.com, there are reports that in the allegedly intercepted emails Dame Porter referred to millions of pounds being available to her son.

Police began investigating Stanford after he resigned from Redbus and sold his shares in the firm last year. Stanford has denied the charges.

A second man, George Liddell, described in reports as a corporate troubleshooter, was charged with the same offences last month. Both men are scheduled to appear in court in March. If convicted, they could be fined or jailed for up to two years.
