In an effort to grow its efforts around hybrid cloud management, OpenStack and containers, Red Hat is acquiring IT automation software provider Ansible, Inc. for upwards of $100 million according to reports.
Its software includes the Ansible IT automation and DevOps platform, along with the NOC-style dashboard software Ansible Tower that provides a multi-tier view of application deployments and IT automation on hybrid clouds.
Ansible’s software (including its open source automation projects on GitHub) focuses on agentless automation that enables organizations to deploy and manage applications across private and public clouds, accelerate service delivery through DevOps, and streamline OpenStack installations and upgrades.
Ansible automation is used by a number of Fortune 100 companies that have large and complex private cloud environments, and its software won InfoWorld’s Bossie Award in 2015.
According to Red Hat’s announcement Friday, it will add Ansible to its hybrid cloud management and DevOps portfolio which includes CloudForms, and software lifecycle management solution Red Hat Satellite.
“Ansible is a clear leader in IT automation and DevOps, and helps Red Hat take a significant step forward in our goal of creating frictionless IT,” Joe Fitzgerald, VP of Red Hat’s management division, said in a statement. “Red Hat is transforming IT management, driving innovation that is 100-percent open source, built on an open management platform, and relentlessly focused on reducing cost and complexity through ease of use and automation. I am thrilled to welcome Ansible to Red Hat to help us expand that commitment.”
Red Hat has a history of boosting its hybrid cloud solutions through acquisition. In fact, many of the features in 2013’s CloudForms 3.0 release stemmed from Red Hat’s $104 million acquisition of ManageIQ in 2012.
According to IDC’s latest report on cloud systems management software, the worldwide cloud systems management software market grew 29.9 percent in 2014 to be worth $2.3 billion in 2014. The market is set to grow quickly in the next few years, reaching $8.3 billion by 2019, representing a huge opportunity for software providers.
