Red Hat Selling Java App Server Support

July 30, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Red Hat (redhat.com) plans to begin selling a subscription service supporting Jonas, an open source java application server built by France-based ObjectWeb, according to a report by Cnet. Jonas is based on the prevailing Java server standard, Java 2 Enterprise Edition. The report said Red Hat plans to charge $999 a year for the service.

The latest move by North Carolina-based Red Hat, which has focused on selling support and services for the Linux operating system, would put it in competition with JBoss and other Java vendors such as IBM, BEA Systems, Oracle and Sun Microsystems.

According to the report, Red Hat plans to support open source application Java development tools from BEA, called Beehive, in the near future.
