The warranty, part of Red Hat’s Open Source Assurance Program, comes on the heels of a similar announcement made last week by SuSE Linux, recently acquired by Novell, who said it would offer legal protection to users of the Linux open source operating system.

The recent moves by SuSE and Red Hat were made as SCO continues to press its case against IBM and issues warnings to enterprises that it alleges are using versions of Linux that incorporate UNIX code owned by SCO.

Other industry players have made similar moves in the last few months.

Hewlett-Packard is offering legal protection for its Linux users and The Open Source Development Labs, a multi-company Linux consortium that includes Intel, IBM and MontaVista Software, has started a $10 million dollar legal defense fund to protect users against any potential SCO lawsuits.
